Lemierre Syndrome?

learn the signs // diagnose them // seek help // contact a specialist

Lemierre syndrome is a rare, but potentially fatal disease that usually affects otherwise healthy young persons following a seemingly innocent infection such as a sore throat, an ear infection, or a dental infection.

Our Research

We have set up the Bacteria-Associated Thrombosis/Thrombophlebitis and Lemierre Syndrome (BATTLE) registry to improve our knowledge of this condition and treat it better.

Investigators
Stefano Barco, MD, is staff physician, head of research, and professor of internal medicine at the Department of Angiology of the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland, and a visiting scientist of the Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis of the University Medical Center Mainz, Germany. He is active in the care of patients with arterial and venous disorders and teaches at different institutions. His primary research interest is in the management of venous thromboembolism. He has written or co-authored more than 160 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is co-PI, Steering Committee, or Clinical Event Committee member of multinational clinical trials on pulmonary embolism and peripheral artery disease. He is a member of the World Thrombosis Day steering committee, in the nucleus of the European Society of Cardiology "Working Group on Pulmonary Circulation and Right Ventricular Function", co-chair of the ISTH subcommittee "Factor XI and the Contact System", and a member of the International Consortium for Health Outcome Measures for VTE. Dr. Barco is the recipient of the 2021 Scientist Award of the Walter and Gertrud Siegenthaler Foundation, 2021 Bayer Thrombosis Prize, and 2014 Bonizzoni Award (Ferrata-Storti Foundation), as well as of the GTH, ESC, SISET, and ISTH Early Career Awards. He serves as Associate Editor for "Thrombosis Research", "Haemostaseologie", and "VASA-European Journal of Vascular Medicine", and as Editorial Board Member for the "Journal of Thrombosis and Hemostasis".
Luca Valerio, MD, is a medical resident in Internal Medicine and Cardiology and postdoctoral Virchow Fellow at the Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis at the University of Mainz, Germany. His research mainly relies on biostatistical analysis of large datasets and focuses on the prognosis and long-term course of venous thromboembolism, including pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, and rare thromboinflammatory diseases such as Lemierre syndrome and other forms of septic thrombophlebitis. In 2020 he was awarded the Marco Brockhaus scientific award for research on paediatric thrombosis from the GTH (Gesellschaft für Thrombose- und Hämostaseforschung).

Collaborate with the BATTLE Registry

As a physician who has treated or is treating patients with Lemierre syndrome or other forms of septic thrombophlebitis (including septic cerebral vein thrombosis, septic pulmonary embolism, septic portal vein thrombosis, or ovarian vein thrombosis), you can cooperate by obtaining the informed consent of patients seen at your institution, sharing their data through a secure electronic case report form, and participate in our scientific publications.
